The Holiday Inn in Mestra Marghera was very comfortable and good value for money. Our room was spacious and the breakfast buffet had a good variety of food. The air conditioning worked really well. I hate going to hotels with half-hearted heating or cooling systems I would recommend it to anyone as there is a bus service a short walk from the hotel that takes you to the heart of Venice in about 15 minutes.
Also near the hotel was a varied mix of places to eat so again if you don't want to get caught in the tourist traps and can't face McDonalds this gives you another option.
There is so much to see in Venice. We bought the one day pass but I didn't enjoy the water buses. They were always full and too hot. We preferred to walk where possible.
Murano island was beautiful and there were glass works to suit every budget. It is also very pretty with a canal running through the central part of the island.
Don't be put off like I was from visiting Venice. It is expensive and it's not!
